A rare Dornier Do 17 has been located by sonar off the coast of Kent in the UK. On 26 August 1940, a Do 17Z from 7./KG 3 was shot down and force-landed on a sandbank on the coast of Kent, where it disappeared in the sand. Sixty-eight years later, the wreck began emerging from the sand.

A recent sonar survey and inspection has revealed the aircraft has been remarkably preserved. Unfortunately, the wreck’s location is now known to many, and souvenir hunters have begun to steal parts of the aircraft.

The RAF Museum is raising funds to salvage the aircraft, which is believed to be the only surviving Do 17 to date.
