Pyotr Ostapenko, a famous Soviet and Russian test pilot, died on April 8 aged 83. Ostapenko was the test pilot for all major Mikoyan and Gurevitch fighters from the MiG-21 to the MiG-29, incluing the MiG-25 and MiG-31. During his career he logged more than 5000 hours of test flight and took 8 world records in speed and altitude, flying the MiG-25 or Ye-166.
