Spitfires can pick up high sink rates if power was a problem, or power was lost on very short final. I was landing the SAAF Museum Spitfire Mk IX and during a curved aaproach noticed I was getting low on short final. The poor forward and downwards view can mask this at times. I remember being quite surprised at how much power I needed, to reduce the ROD. The only strange thing here is the pilot applying power after landing? Not too good for a possibly damaged engine/reduction box?? Must surely have felt the prop strike/seen pieces fly off?

You sound like a man of experience!! how hard is it to read, It was landing after engine problems occurred that’s why it almost crashed. Probably the experience of the pilot saved him from more serious problems.. So next time read the story before you react…
