North American F-86A Sabre 48-0178, the only airworthy F-86A Sabre and one of the oldest jets still flying, has returned to the skies this week in Rockford, Illinois, with Paul Wood at the controls. The aircraft was previously operated in the UK by the Golden Apple Trust and returned to the USA earlier this year where Heritage Aero worked to restore her to airworthiness.

REALLY neat! I flew F-86H’s (last of the ‘fun’ airplanes according to Chuck Yeager, that I met at AirVenture some years ago. He was also the commander of an F-100 unit that was in Spain when I was there in 1957-58) in the Mass ANG sooo many years ago…early 1960’s…no longer flying after 55 plus years…’made’ a pilot by USAF..flew piper cubs, T-28’s, T-Birds, B-47s, F-86Hs, Cessna 172, and owned a Cessna 182 for about 12 years. I no longer fly, but am a Member of EAA and do mentoring/seminars with youngsters and ‘oldsters’ on many Aviation topics here in Seattle, WA area.
