Between March and December 1953, my father, Sqn. Leader W. P. Swaby, often flew PS 890 whilst in 81 Squadron, Singapore, out of Seletar and Kuala Lumpur, as part of Operation Firedog. He would often touch down in Butterworth, Penang and flew as far North as Chungkai, Thailand. 81 Squadron had three Spitfires, PS890, PS836 and PS888 and all three were used for photo reconnaissance of Malayan targets until the last sortie to Kota Tinggi by PS888 on April 1st 1954. They also took part in the Coronation flypast on June 2nd 1952 and the Queen,s Birthday flypast on June 6th 1952 at Seletar. March 6th 1953 was the first recorded flight of PS890 in W. P. Swaby’s Pilot’s Flying Log Book and December 31st 1953, the last.
