On January 9, 2016, british pilot Tracey Curtis-Taylor landed in Sydney, Australia, in her 1942 Stearman “Spirit of Artemis”. The 53 year-old pilot had flown 21,000 km in 50 legs since her departure from Farnborough in the UK in October 2015, replicating Amy Johnson’s 1930 flight when she became the first women to fly solo from the UK to Australia.

After landing, Tracey said she needed “a drink and a haircut”. Her route took her “across Europe and the Mediterranean to Jordan, over the Arabian desert, across the Gulf of Oman to Pakistan, India and across Asia”.

The biplane appears to have stalled while it was flying inverted with limited speed. The aircraft burst into flames upon impact, killing Wicker and Schwenker instantly.

Continue reading]]> These photos of Stearman Model 75 registered F-AZGJ were taken in Le Plessis-Belleville (LFPP) on June 4, 2010 at the Commemorative Air Force French Wing’s annual fly-in.

Le Plessis-Belleville is a short distance to the north of Paris and is home to many antique aircraft, many of which belong to members of the CAF’s French Wing.

Two men were injured in the crash of their Stearman shortly after taking off from Fabens Airport on Sunday morning. Their lives are not endangered but both sustained important injuries and have been hospitalized. Engine trouble might be the cause of the crash. Source.

Continue reading]]> Alan Lopez’s rare Stearman M-2 flew on July 20 at Robbinsville Airport, NJ, where the biplane was restored by the Posey Brothers. The aircraft was found in a lake by Bob Cameron many years ago. The first flight was uneventful and further testing will be undertaken. According to Antique Airfield News, this is the first time a Bull Stearman has flown since October 8, 1938.

A video of the first landing is also available as well as pictures of the aircraft.
