The French association Réplic’Air recently built a Morane-Saulnier Type G replica which flew across the Mediterranean to commemorate Roland Garros’ first flight across that sea in 1913. The association has just announced that its next project will be far more ambitious.

The goal is to build a Dewoitine D.551, and have it fly by June 2017 at the latest. The aircraft, a derivative of the famous Dewoitine D.520 fighter, never flew as France was defeated before it could be produced.

According to Réplic’Air’s Jérémy Caussade, the project is not in the least unrealistic: “There will be a lot of work as far as the engine is concerned, but the aircraft was of a fairly simple construction. It had been designed to be mass-produced. In addition, there is a great deal of documentation concerning it in the Haute-Garonne department archives, which will be of a great help.”

The great challenge for Réplic’Air will be to find a Hispano-Suiza 12Y51 engine, as current plans do not allow for a modern engine to be used.

Continue reading]]> Baptiste Salis, a well-known French vintage aircraft and warbird pilot, left from Fréjus in southern France this morning at 8:21 AM and landed and Bizerta in Tunisia at 4:05PM, reenacting Rolland Garros’ first flight across the Mediteranean Sea a hundred years ago on 23 September 1913.

Salis flew a Morane-Saulnier Type G replica built for this purpose by Réplic’Air. Aside from a more modern and reliable engine, the aircraft is identical to the one used by Garros a century ago.

Continue reading]]> Morane Type G ReplicAirThe Morane-Saulnier Type G replica built by the French association Replic’Air made its maiden flight in the early evening of Saturday August 10th at Auch-Gers airport. The pilot for the flight was Christophe Marchand, and everything was reported as working well.

A second flight was made with Nils Harald Hansen, and more test flights are to be made in preparation for the commemorative flight across the Mediterranean on September 22.

The French association Replic’Air recently finished the construction of a Morane-Saulnier Type G replica, which will be used to cross the Mediterranean sea on September 22, to commemorate the first crossing of that body of water by Roland Garros in 1913.

The replica is powered by a Rotec engine, which is similar to the original Gnome engine but offers greater reliability. The first flight should occur in the next few days, and will be followed by trials in preparation for the overseas flight, which should last 8 hours.
