Brigadier General Paul Tibbets IV, the grandson of Brigadier General Paul Tibbets Jr., who flew the B-29 “Enola Gay” during the Hiroshima nuclear bombing on 6 August 1945, will fly as copilot of the B-29 “Doc” during a flight from Wichita to Whiteman AFB this coming Friday.

Paul Tibbets IV is the commanding officer of the US Air Force’s 509th Bomb Wing which operates the B-2 “Spirit” stealth bomber.

The B-29 known as Doc successfully completed its second flight since being restored to airworthy status.

Doc’s second flight lasted approximately 52 minutes at an altitude of four to five thousand feet on a flight pattern east of Wichita, Kans. The historic warbird took off from McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita just after 10 a.m. Central Time and landed just before 11 a.m, Saturday, Oct. 1.

As scheduled, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Doc” flew today in Wichita, Kansas. It is one of only two airworthy B-29 in the world, the other being “FiFi”, which is flown by the Commemorative Air Force.
