After so many bad news for the warbird community, we are happy to move on to better ones !

Hawker Hurricane Mk I P2902 flew again on 19 June, more than 77 years after it crash-landed on a beach near Dunkirk in May 1940.

The aircraft was restored to airworthiness by Hawker Restorations Ltd and made a 20-minute maiden flight yesterday from Elmsett airfield in Suffolk. Stuart Goldspink was at the controls and was satisfied with the aircraft’s behaviour. After conclusion of the flight tests, the Hurricane will be based in Duxford.

https://www.facebook.com/hawkerrestorations/videos/852873551526351/

This brings the number of airworthy Hurricanes to 15, including 9 in the UK. Hawker Restorations Ltd is reportedly also restoring two other Hurricanes, including a twin-seater.

The formation will be led from the back seat of a twin-seat Spitfire by Wing Commander Tom Neil, DFC, AFC, AE, a 95-year old Battle of Britain veteran. After reaching Selsey Bill, the formation will break into groups of four, which will fly different paths across south and south-east England and land at various airfields used during the battle: Biggin Hill, Duxford, Northweald, Northolt, with some returning to Goodwood.

It is the first time since the end of World War II that so many Battle of Britain aircraft fly together.

Rebuilt as Mk IIa DR393 the aircraft was delivered to the Soviet Air Force in May 1941, serving for about two years before again crashing near Murmansk, Russia in 1943. The hulk was eventually restored as a Mk IIc in the UK from 1992 to 1995. It was transferred to New Zealand in 1995, and acquired by the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum in Wanaka, New Zealand. Its first flight after restoration occurred in Christchurch on 12 January 2000.
