Nieuport 23 replica flies in Switzerland

The Nieuport 23C-1 replica built by Nieuport Memorial Flyers made a successful maiden flight in Grenchen, Switzerland, on 21 September 2020. The aircraft, registered HB-RNA, was flown by Isidor von Arx. It is powered by the rotary engine of a Thulin A (Swedish license-built Blériot XI).

This project was started in the year 2000. Its progress can be followed on the Nieuport Memorial Flyers website. The website is in German but you can access an automatically-translated version of it here.

Pilot wounded in RAF B.E.2c replica crash at Sywell Aerodrome

A Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c replica crashed at Sywell Aerodrome in the United-Kingdom while training with five other aircraft in preparation for a display later this month. Fortunately, pilot Matthew Boddington survived the crash and has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The aircraft is part of the Bremont Great War Display Team, which offers World War I aerial displays with up to nine aircraft.

Belgian Aviation Preservation Association receives SV4-RS prototype

The Belgian Aviation Preservation Association (BAPA) recently added a “classic aircraft from the future” to its collection !

The aircraft in question is the most recent variant of the famous Stampe & Vertongen SV-4 : the SV4-RS, built by Ultralight Concept.

The SV4-RS is an ultralight version of the SV-4 designed and built by Raoul Severin. The airframe received by the BAPA is one of the prototypes that underwent and survived stress tests in order to obtain the type’s certification in several countries.

The BAPA intends to complete and reassemble the airframe in order to showcase the construction technique of this specific variant.

Ultralight Concept acquired the original Stampe SV.4 blueprints in 2007 and designed this lightweight version by changing the construction techniques and materials, which made it possible to lower the empty weight from 560 kg to 295 kg.

The Junkers F.13 certified again after 99 years

“Ninety-nine years after the first flight of the Junkers F13, Rimowa, the German luggage manufacturer responsible for ressurecting the type, has announced that its replica was certified by Swii aviation authorities on 28 March 2018.A small production run is being considered.” (Source: Aerobuzz)

The first replica aircraft made its maiden flight on 15 September 2016. Some concessions were made to modernity and safety, as the aircraft is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-985 «Wasp Junior», hydraulic shock absorbers and brakes as well as a tail wheel rather than the skid of the original aircraft.

First flight for the Shuttleworth Collection Sopwith Camel

The Sopwith Camel replica built for the Shuttleworth Collection made its maiden flight on 18 May with chief pilot Dodge Bailey at the controls. The aircraft carries the markings of D1851 “Ikanopit”, a Camel built by Ruston-Proctor that served with the Royal Air Force’s No 70 Squadron in 1918.

Javier Fernando Arango was killed in the crash of his Nieuport 28 replica last Sunday near Paso Robles, California.

Arango, aged 54 ans, was a board member emeritus of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museumet and owner of “one of the world’s finest private collections of World War I aircraft.”

Dr Larry Howard’s Sopwith Pup replica recently flew in Spokane, Washington. The aircraft is powered by a Le Rhône engine and is identical to original Sopwith Pups, except for modern magnetos. Its construction required eight years of work.

Blériot XI replica with Anzani engine displayed in Budapest

From the Early Aero blog: a Blériot XI replica, similar to the one used by Louis Blériot to cross the Channel and built from contemporary blueprints was recently displayed in the Vigadó Concert Hall in Budapest, Hungary. The replica is powered by a 3-cylinder Anzani engine replica.

Built by the Hungarian Vintage Glider Club, it has received a certificate of airworthiness and is registered IF-BLE, although no plans for flight testing have been announced.

Pfalz D.VIII replica powered by original engine to be built in Sweden

The well-known WW1 aircraft builder and collector Mikael Carlson of Sweden has announced that he is building a Pfalz D.VIII replica that will be powered by an original 200 hp Siemens-Halske Sh.III rotary engine.

The Pfalz D.VIII first flew in 1918. Some 120 were ordered by Germany based on its expected high performance, but only 40 machines were produced before the war ended, these being mostly used for evaluation.
