Hispano-Suiza HS-77 engine recovered from Lake Zug in Switzerland

A Hispano-Suiza HS-77 engine (license-built version of the Hispano-Suiza HS 12Ycrs) was recovered from the Zug lake in Switzerland. The engine belonged to an EKW C-35 that crashed in the lake on 19 May 1940, killing its two crewmembers.

The aircraft and its propeller, which was also recovered, will be displayed at the Transportation Museum in Lucerne.

The EKW C-35 was a 1930s twin-seat reconnaissance biplane, of which 90 examples were produced and served in the Swiss Air Force until 1954.

P-40 Warhawk discovered and salvaged in Ketch Straight

A Soviet Lend-Lease Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was discovered underwater in the Kertch Straight during preparation work for the construction of the Kertch Straight bridge, a road-rail bridge under construction by the Russian Federation, to span the Strait of Kerch between the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea and the Taman Peninsula of Krasnodar Krai.

The aircraft was recovered using equipment borrowed from the construction group. No details on its exact identity are available but photos of the recovery operation are available from The Daily Mail.

Italian Air Force recovers Reggiane Re.2000 submerged since 1943

The Italian Air Force has recovered a Reggiane Re.2000 that was submerged since 1943, when it crashed in the sea near La Spezia in 1943 during a training mission. The recovery was done graciously by Micoperi, the company responsible for putting back afloat the cruise ship Costa Concordia. The aircraft is currently in a desalination tank and will later be restored and exposed by the Italian AF.

Goodwin Sands Dornier 17 recovered

After several delays due to bad weather conditions, the recovery of the Goodwin Sands Dornier 17 was successfully carried out on June 10. The aircraft, believed to be the sole survivor of its type in the world, was lying inverted under 50 ft of water.

It will be transported for restoration and later exposed at the RAF Museum in Hendon.

An Il-2 Shturmovik was raised from a lake in Russia recently. The aircraft made an emergency landing on the frozen lake on November 25, 1943. The crew of two was able to leave the aircraft but it subsequently fell through the ice and sank to the bottom of the lake.

A rare Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive-bomber has been recovered from the Baltic Sea floor by a German Army recovery team. The aircraft was lying at a depth of 60 ft and appears to be in relatively good condition.

This is the third rare German aircraft to be recovered from the sea in a matter of months. Although some 6,500 Stuka were built between 1936 and 1944, only two intact examples survive, along with a handful of wrecks. The Stuka became a symbol of the Nazi war machine ealy in the war, terrorizing its targets with its dive horn.
