Dave Cooper, a Maryland State Police pilot familiar with the T-28 Trojan, has alerted the NTSB of what he believes might be the reason behind the crash that cost John Mangan his life on September 17 at the Thunder over the Blueridge airshow.

Cooper noticed on a photograph taken by Ron Agnir for the The Journal that an inspection panel seemed to be open on the aircraft’s right wing. If the panel is badly closed and opens in flight, “it does make a big effect on the elevator’s control” explains Cooper, who has some 80 hours on the type.

Cooper explained he is not trying to speculate on the actual cause of the crash but that he wanted to make sure the NTSB team investigating the crash would be notified of his findings.
