The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Ryan NYP replica flew on December 5. The aircraft is said to be the most accurate replica ever built of the Ryan NYP “Spirit of St Louis” flown non-stop by Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris in May 1927.
The maiden flight was made by Ken Cassens and went as expected. Several test flights have been made since then, and more testing is to be made.
A restored Wright J-5 Whirlwind radial was used and functional 1920s-era flight instruments were incorporated — including the same basic type of earth inductor compass used by Lindbergh.
The Espace Air Passion (formerly known as the Musée Régional de l’Air d’Angers) will receive the Phoenix Diploma from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) on December 11, for its reconstruction of an AVIA 152 glider.
The AVIA 152 was an important glider in the 1930s, with some 200 examples built of which none have survived to this day. With private funding and using original plans, the EAP built a replica of the AVIA 152 and flew it for the first time in 2010. The aircraft is identicial to the original AVIA 152, but was covered with modern and more durable canvas. The construction of the replica took 10 years to achieve.

The Royal Air Force’s Memorial Flight Club is the official club of the famous Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The BBMF operates six Supermarine Spitfires, two Hawker Hurricanes, the Avro Lancaster PA474, two Douglas Dakotas and two de Havilland Canada DHC.1 Chipmunks, which are presented to the public during air shows and commemorations. The BBMF is somewhat unique as most modern air forces are not much – if at all – involved in the preservation of their former aircraft and the memories of their veterans, or are only in an indirect fashion.

If you want to treat someone, or yourself, to a very special Christmas gift, you might want to consider this. Fred Murrin, well known for his very accurate World War I aircraft reproductions, is currently finishing a very accurate Fokker D.VIII for Brian Coughlin in New York. The fighter is complete with printed lozenge, hand stenciling and brushed wing finish, as well as intricately detailed Spandau machine guns, ammo chutes and boxes. In addition,it features historically correct cowlings and a highly detailed static replica of a 110 hp Le Rhone rotary engine. If fitted with an airworthy engine, the Fokker will be fully flyable.
The aircraft is up for sale, and can be decorated to the customer’s specifications. To make an offer or get more information, contact Brian Coughlin by email or mobile phone: (315) 436-2217.

The Avro Vulcan XH558 made its final flight on 28 October at Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, Sheffield. The bomber had been restored to airworthiness in October 2007 by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust and made numerous appearances at airshows. Unfortunately, the aircraft’s age and total flight hours are such that still flying it is becoming complicated and hazardous and the decision to end its flying career was announced in May 2015. It will be maintained in a running condition, allowing it to start its engines and taxi.
North American F-86A Sabre 48-0178, the only airworthy F-86A Sabre and one of the oldest jets still flying, has returned to the skies this week in Rockford, Illinois, with Paul Wood at the controls. The aircraft was previously operated in the UK by the Golden Apple Trust and returned to the USA earlier this year where Heritage Aero worked to restore her to airworthiness.
Øyvind Ellingsen, the chairman of Warbirds of Norway, recently took his new Blériot XI-2 replica for a short hop. The aircraft, equipped with a 110 hp Le Rhone rotary engine, was built by Craftlab workshop in Austria and is a replica of “Nordsjøen”, the aircraft used by Trygve Gran, the first person to fly across the North Sea in 1914.
Here are photos of the Féria de l’Air, which took place last weekend at Nîmes, in Southern France. Many thanks to Luc Fesquet for sharing these photos with our visitors!
Prince Harry, who was expected to fly in the back-seat of a Spitfire during the Battle of Britain Day Flypast on 15 September (the Prince’s 31st birthday) elegantly stepped down and gave his seat to Tom Neil, a 95-year old Battle of Britain veteran whose ride was canceled due to mechanical problems.
Brian Coughlin flew his Fokker D.VIII replica equipped with an original 160-hp rotary Gnome engine at Old Rhinebek Aerodrome last weekend. Coughlin built the aircraft in the early 1990s before selling it to Kermit Weeks’ Fantasy of Flight. He purchased the aircraft back in July of this year and equipped it with an overhauled Gnome engine and period instruments.
The unique sound of the rotary engine can be heard in this short video..
